It was a beautiful sunny and crisp fall day here in Boston. What better way to savor the sunshine than with some cupcake sampling? I headed to Georgetown Cupcake’s Boston location at 83 Newbury St. Georgetown Cupcake won the title of Best Cupcake from Boston Magazine’s Best of Boston 2013 list. I must admit that I was skeptical. I may only be an amateur cupcake connoisseur and there are definitely many more cupcakes in Boston to be tried, but I can certainly judge when something tastes good. I have walked past Georgetown Cupcake in the past and seen the huge line running out the door and down Newbury Street and wondered if the cupcakes could be up to the hype.
I first heard about Georgetown Cupcake a few years ago when the company and the sisters who started it, Katherine Kallinis Berman and Sophie Kallinis LaMontagne, were featured on the TLC network show DC cupcakes, which first aired in 2010. The show certainly seems to have helped Georgetown Cupcake to grow in popularity and they now have six locations around the country.
The most popular flavor is red velvet, according to Allie Gilman and Hayley Moir, both associates at Georgetown Cupcake Newbury. “Especially in dozen and half dozen orders, there’s usually at least one red velvet,” said Moir. Both Moir and Gilman agree that the classic, simple flavors, such as milk chocolate or vanilla² (vanilla cake with vanilla frosting) are their favorites. Boston Magazine seems to agree.
I can happily report that, for me, the cupcake surpassed my expectations. I tried a pumpkin spice cupcake with maple cream cheese frosting and it was perfect. The cupcake was moist with a soft, spongey texture and the frosting was fluffy and incredibly smooth. The pumpkin and maple flavors complimented each other, but were also distinctive. There was also a fondant maple leaf on top for decoration. I am a fan of cutesy things, so of course I approved of this. This flavor is only offered during October, so take a break from your window-shopping at Chanel and head on over to Georgetown Cupcake Newbury.
